When you think you're smarter than your lecturer - maybe
I've been attending lectures for two subjects taught by someone with a DR. and a UniMelb rep to her name. She's also Singaporean. Not that I have a problem with that, but while the lectures delivered by other Australian lecturers are well paced and linguistically correct, she seems to trip over her vocabulary and facts.
Examples:
- She keeps pronouncing 'digitised' as 'digitalised', and this happened quite a few times across a few lectures already. EG: "Now all your notes are digitalised".
- On a lecture on Singapore politics, she said Singapore practices "multi-racism" and then, after realising it wasn't quite right, she tried to justify the word by saying it's not racism but we should know what she means.
(It's "multi-racialism" btw).
- She said Singapore's prime minister is Lee Hsien Yang (No, it's not!).
I mean this is inexcusable, being, firstly, a communications lecturer, and a Singaporean. She should have, firstly, good English, as expected of any educator teaching communications. And secondly, being Singaporean, she should not have gotten her own PM's name wrong. Other grouses, she bribes the lecture hall with sweets and she speaks too fast.
I understand an engineering lecturer not having a good grasp of vocabulary. I mean maths and sciences people don't really bother about that so much, But Hello?? Arts and Communications, and you can't speak proper English? Makes me raise an eyebrow or two.
