A bit of nothingness

Hmm..a lot of things going on in my head, but maybe some tips for students and the IT inept

Been wanting to get this down for some time, if you're an International student coming/going to Aussie and you are looking for some value for money accommodation, then never never commit yourself to places like Unilodge,  which charges $350/week for a studio apartment and insist that you take up either a 6-month or 12-month lease.

Instead, settle yourself in a backpackers place (there are wonderful clean ones around) or if you want more luxury, Claremont Hotel, which has a wonderful rate of $50/night going for students, and then start looking for a homeshare apartment or studio apartments that do not require you to commit to a certain rental period.

Why? Because you're going to find yourself wanting to go back during December or June holidays, which are extraordinarily long and that will be a waste of your rent. I say this to art students, who do not have things like exams (which can take place up to a month after school ends).

Each semester is only 12 weeks. Technically that's 3 months. Now if you're only going to spend 6 months studying annually, wouldn't it be a terrible waste to keep on paying rent for those additional 6-months spent not studying? Sadly that's what most students do, they find out that they have committed to a 12-month lease, and then they go back during the holidays and leave the apartment empty.

ARgh! What a terrible waste of money. Say rent is approx $1,000 a month, and you're only in the apartment half the time, it's like throwing $6,000 away per year no? With that money you could have gotten yourself a much nicer apartment without the lease commitment.

Yup that's it.

Next,

I was having a bit of problem deleting a folder which I thought contained a virus this morning. The problem with these folders (which I have seen several times) is that they cannot be deleted. You click 'delete' and you get a message like "this file cannot be deleted..error.... access denied".

I'm not really IT literate but I discovered that many PC problems can actually be solved by just Googling the error message. If you're patient enough, you'll come across forums where the IT literate can tell you how to solve problem A, B or C.

As it is, one forum user suggested the program Unlocker, which allows you to delete files that apparently cannot be deleted. I wouldn't say it worked like a charm, I had to click on the command a few times before the process actually took place, but then it could be because I was impatient, because the 'deleted' window only appeared after a while.

Then....you don't need to rely on your geek friends, because one thing I completely hate, is looking like an idiot, especially like a woman who doesn't know IT. It's that stereotype thing I hate. Women can't program. Humph! Who says??

There!

And now some lovely things I love cooking and have been cooking during this winter. Really love homecooked stuff, and these are things you can't just order from any Chinese restaurant.
braised mushrooms and chicken

pork ribs, corn, and carrot soup (I stole the pic). Yum yum.
